A good night’s sleep all begins with the sheets on your bed. That’s according to Alexis Vitale, founder of interior design firm Vitale Design Group, who says a sheet’s fabric, fit, and feel make a massive difference when it comes to comfort:
“We spend so much time in our beds, so the best thing to do is start with how you sleep. A sheet is about more than just how beautiful it looks.”
But do you need to splurge on a high thread count? Are expensive sheets really better? And what materials are worth buying? Check out our picks for the best bed sheets and learn how to find a set that fits your needs.

Why It Stands Out
Crafted from long-staple organic cotton fibers, this luxury sheet set has a breathable design, suiting a wide range of sleep preferences. Although on the pricier end, you get what you pay for.
The 300-thread-count sateen weave gives a silky-soft feel and subtle sheen, while Saatva’s durable stitching and quality construction add a hotel-like finish to any bedroom.
Beyond comfort, our No. 1 pick stands out when it comes to sustainability, with GOTS-certified organic cotton and Fair Trade Certified™ manufacturing. The sheets also come with deep pockets that fit mattresses up to 16 inches high.
Best Cooling Sheets: Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set
Best sheets for hot sleepers
Pros

Cons
|
Why It Stands Out
“If you sleep warm, I recommend looking for something more breathable with natural fibers and light weaves,” says Vitale.
This bamboo sheet set from Cozy Earth may tick those boxes—it has a lightweight sateen weave that allows air to circulate, helping you stay cool and comfortable as you sleep. The smooth and silky fabric also gives your bedroom a luxurious look.
Other benefits include a fabric construction that gets softer with every wash. The sheets accommodate mattresses up to 20 inches deep, which is more than most sets. Cozy Earth says the sheets have a high thread count but doesn’t specify the exact number.
Best Cotton Sheets: L.L. Bean Pima Cotton Percale Sheet Set
A good choice for those who prefer classic cotton sheets

Why It Stands Out
Woven from long-staple pima cotton, these 280-thread-count sheets from L.L. Bean have a percale weave that creates a smooth, crisp texture against your skin. “Cotton is breathable, comfortable, and easy to maintain. It can feel crisp and cool,” says Vitalie.
Comfortable for sleepers who want a cooler feel, the set features hemstitched detailing and comes in various colors and sizes. It includes a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and pillowcases.
The New York Times Wirecutter likewise named the product among its top picks for the best cotton sheet sets, saying the sheets “only get better the more you wash them and the longer you use them.”
Best Linen Sheets: Quince European Linen Sheet Set
For linen lovers who want bedding that gets softer over time
Pros
|
Cons
|
Why It Stands Out
Quince’s European Linen sheet set has a relaxed, slightly textured feel compared to the smoother finish of traditional cotton. “What’s interesting with linen is the more you wash it, the more it softens,” says Vitale. “It kind of gives you more of that European bed look if that’s what you’re going for.”
This top pick is designed to fit standard mattresses up to 16 inches deep, offering a secure fit for most beds, and it has a 150 GSM weight—just the right balance between too thin and too heavy in terms of density.
The linen in this set has an OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, which means it’s been tested for harmful substances. You can also choose from various colors and sizes. The breathable texture may work well for warm sleepers.
Best Sateen Sheets: Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Core Sheet Set
Perfect choice for people who want soft, silky sheets
Pros
|
Cons
|
Why It Stands Out
“If you prefer a smoother, more polished feel, cotton sateen offers a softer finish,” Vitale explains.
This particular set from Brooklinen has a 495-thread count, which adds a heavier feel without sacrificing softness, while labeled side tags make it easy to tell which way the sheet goes on your mattress.
It also earns our pick for the best sateen sheets because of the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, giving you extra peace of mind. A fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcases are included.
Best Budget Sheets: Mellanni Iconic 6-Piece Microfiber Sheet Set
For shoppers who want an affordable sheet set without compromising quality
Pros
|
Cons
|
Why It Stands Out
This six-piece microfiber sheet set from Mellanni offers a comfortable sleeping option without the expensive price tag. Of course, “with microfibers, you’re going to feel a little bit warmer, whereas true cotton is more breathable and comfortable,” Vitale adds.
Still, made from double-brushed microfiber, the sheets have a soft, smooth feel, with many colors and sizes to choose from. You get one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and a generous four pillowcases.
Winning the Best Overall Microfiber Sheets category designation from Good Housekeeping, these can keep you comfortable in different seasons. Mellanni’s sheet set fits mattresses up to 16 inches deep and has temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking properties. It also has the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification.

Why It Stands Out
Featuring a breathable sateen weave, these high-quality 100% organic cotton sheets offer softness with a slight sheen, making them a strong option for sleepers who crave comfort.
The set includes two pillowcases, one flat sheet, and one fitted sheet with a 17-inch pocket depth. There’s also top-stitched elastic banding that keeps the fitted sheet snugly in place during the night.
Boll & Branch’s 300-thread-count set is GOTS-certified and made in a Fair Trade factory. It also has an OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification.
How We Chose the Best Bed Sheets
Our picks are based on research into each sheet set’s materials, features, construction, certifications, customer reviews, and other factors. We looked for options that stood out across different categories such as breathability, softness, fit, cooling, and overall value.
What to Look for When Buying Bed Sheets
A sheet set may look great online, but it won’t be any good if it traps heat, slips off your mattress, or falls apart after a few washes. Paying attention to materials, thread count, and other factors helps you find the right fit for your bedroom.
Material
Fabric type is one of the biggest things to consider when looking for the best sheet sets.
- Cotton is the most popular material for sheets because it’s soft and breathable, but not all cotton is the same. For example, long-staple cotton like pima has longer fibers, making the fabric smoother and less likely to pill.
- Linen, on the other hand, is naturally lightweight, so it’s often the go-to for those who sleep warm. However, it has a relaxed and textured feel that can wrinkle easily. So, it’s not for everyone.
- Then there’s microfiber, which tends to be cheaper than cotton and linen. It’s also soft and smooth. However, it may not be as breathable as natural fabrics.
- Bamboo viscose is an alternative option, known for its silky feel and moisture-wicking properties.
“Some of my favorite sheets are honestly bamboo,” says Vitale. “But I know I’m getting bamboo sheets that are pure. A bamboo mix might not give you what you want when it comes to breathability or that silky, cool feel.”
Weave
Weave influences the texture of sheets and how they look.
- Percale weaves are extremely lightweight, with a crisp finish that might remind you of fresh bedding in a hotel.
- Sateen weaves, by contrast, are smooth, silky, and have a slight sheen. But they can feel a little warmer than percale.
If you’re looking for a looser weave, linen may be the right option as it encourages airflow. It also has a slightly textured finish.
Thread Count
This is the number of threads woven into a single square inch of fabric, giving you a rough idea of how dense a sheet feels. However, a higher thread count doesn’t necessarily mean higher quality, despite what some manufacturers claim.
“People tend to focus on impressive thread count numbers because that’s what they were told,” says Vitale. “But the belief a higher thread count means better sheets isn’t true. It’s really the fiber quality, the construction, the weave, and the finishing that matters.”
Fit and Pocket Depth
You’ll always want to check a fitted sheet’s pocket depth so it fits properly over your bed, especially if you have a larger mattress or a topper. Standard fitted sheets have a pocket depth of around 12 inches, while deep-pocket options range from 15-20 inches.
Care and Durability
Some sheet sets are easier to care for than others. Microfiber, for example, is low maintenance and can usually be tossed into the washer and dryer without any fuss.
Vitale says other materials require more upkeep: “Linen, for example, may look beautifully relaxed, but it wrinkles, and you know it can make you itch sometimes. So, it probably isn’t always right for some people.”
Price and Value
Luxury sheets aren’t always the best choice, and a premium price tag doesn’t automatically mean better quality. Consider whether a sheet set is worth the cost by evaluating materials, durability, construction, and so on. A cheaper product may offer greater value in some situations.
Ultimately, as Vitale points out, “The best bed sheets are what feel great against your skin, wash well, and make getting into bed feel like luxury”—the perfect recipe for a full night of restful sleep.
