Browse eBay’s videocassette listings and you’ll encounter some million-dollar asking prices. If you’re wondering why an old videotape of Aladdin is worth that much…it isn’t. “Those prices aren’t real,” warns Rob Keyes of ScreenRant.com. Sellers can ask for as much as they want on eBay, but buyers don’t bite. Still, a small percentage of videotapes do have collectible value. Bottom Line Personal asked Keyes for details…
Are VHS Tapes Worth Anything?
VHS collecting surged during the pandemic years, with desirable tapes bringing tens of thousands of dollars at auction. The market has since softened, but videocassettes still occasionally sell for big bucks. Example: A 1986 copy of Back to the Future sealed in its original packaging sold for $25,000 on eBay in 2025.
The VHS tapes that have value to collectors typically are rare early releases of iconic films from the 1970s or 1980s still sealed in their original plastic wrapping. If a videocassette’s packaging has been opened, the tape almost certainly won’t have significant value. It’s also a big plus if a grading service such as CGC or Beckett rates the videocassette as mint or near-mint. Betamax, an alternative videocassette format to VHS, is potentially collectible, too.
Precisely how much a particular videocassette is worth can be tricky to pin down—sealed copies of rare editions don’t come to market often, and seemingly modest differences in condition can dramatically affect value. And since the market has declined, prices from VHS collecting’s 2020-2023 peak should be taken with a big grain of salt. Among the videocassettes that might have substantial value now…
Back to the Future
As noted above, a sealed Betamax copy of the original 1986 videocassette release of the film sold for $25,000 in 2025.
Star Wars
A sealed copy of the original 1982 VHS release sold for $23,750 at auction in 2024. Similar: A sealed 1984 copy of the Star Wars’ sequel The Empire Strikes Back sold for $600 in 2025.
The Goonies
A sealed 1986 copy fetched $8,437.50 at auction in 2025. Another copy sold for $50,000 during the peak of the pandemic-era VHS collecting craze.
Superman
A sealed VHS copy from 1979 sold for $4,000 in 2024.
Also: Videocassettes of iconic horror films are a notable collecting subcategory—copies of Friday the 13th from 1980…Halloween from 1981…Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 1981…and Evil Dead from 1983 can bring hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars. Texas Chainsaw Massacre videocassettes from 1981 are so rare that even an unsealed copy sold for $450 in 2025.
Are Disney VHS Tapes Worth Money?
Many VHS tapes listed for head-scratchingly high amounts on eBay are Disney animated films—but it’s a myth that Disney videotapes tend to be valuable, warns Keyes. Disney sold so many copies of most of its movies that few are sufficiently scarce. However, those that are in great condition and still sealed in their packaging may have significant value…
Cars
This videocassette is rare because it was released by Pixar in 2007, when most consumers had switched to DVD. Several sealed copies sold for between $1,350 and $2,200 on eBay in 2025.
Dumbo
A sealed 1982 copy sold for $230 on eBay in 2025.
The Lion King
A sealed 1994 copy sold for $175 on eBay in 2025.
