Kombucha is trendy right now, but it is not without its dangers. In this video, Dr. Andrew Rubman, naturopathic physician and author of Bottom Line’s “Nature Doc’s Patient Diary” blog, explains that when created under unsanitary conditions, kombucha can lead to liver toxicity, autoimmune disorders, and headaches. These illnesses are caused by unwelcome microorganisms fermenting in the sugary blend used to create the kombucha. Dr. Rubman advises consumers to drink kombucha that has been cold-filtered or pasteurized. He notes that despite these concerns, kombucha has significant benefits such as protecting the liver and acting as an antioxidant.
