Often, there is more than one prescription drug available to treat a specific health condition. In this video, Dr. David Sherer, anesthesiologist and author of Bottom Line’s What Your Doctor Isn’t Telling You blog, explains how to tell which medication is right for you. First, he cautions that new and improved drugs are not always the best choice, because they often are expensive and not fully evaluated for safety or effectiveness. For many conditions, there are existing medications that are just as effective and often less expensive. Consider speaking with your doctor to see what alternatives are available for your condition, and also be aware that your health insurance plan can potentially help you save money if you do need a costly drug. Being your own advocate and exploring all treatment options can save you time, money and trouble.

David Sherer, MD, is an American physician, inventor, and author. He currently practices anesthesiology in the suburbs of Washington D.C. and is a tireless advocate for hospitalized patients.
