There are a number of natural supplements that can be used to prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. In this video, Dr. Gayatri Devi, board-certified neurologist and author of The Spectrum of Hope: An Optimistic and New Approach to Alzheimer’s Disease, lists some of these supplements and explains how they work. Anti-inflammatories such as curcumin, blueberries, resveratrol and omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in blood vessels, increase blood flow to the brain and help remove toxins. Ginkgo biloba also increases blood flow to the brain and has anti-inflammatory properties. B vitamins promote brain and nerve health, but some older people may require injections of these vitamins in order to absorb them. The Mediterranean Diet is recommended because of its anti-inflammatory foods. Finally, Dr. Devi suggests that patients work with a naturopath to be sure that they are maximizing the benefits of supplements.
